As we reported just last week, the iPod touch has escaped from the jail where it was wrongly imprisoned for twenty years for the death of its wife. It should be considered armed and extremely awesome.
The open source iJailbreak app promises to bring the same level of simplicity to installing third-party apps on the iPod touch that the erstwhile AppTapp brought to its cousin the iPhone. Without an iPod touch handy, we can’t confirm that it works, but if you’ve given it a try, let us know.
Of course, with no AT&T ties to worry about on the touch, the question remains: will hacking it for third-party applications go the way of the iPhone, or perhaps the more condoned route of the Apple TV? Of this I am sure: either way, Apple will definitely take some flack, either for locking down a system for no particular reason, or for being hypocritical in its treatment of iPhone and iPod touch. We will watch the hacking’s future with considerable interest.
