iPod Firmware 1.2 hates mono podcasts?

iPod logoWe loves mono podcasting on our prrrecious iPod—no! We hates mono podcasting.

Ahem. While listening to the latest MacBreak Weekly Podcast, I heard host Leo Laporte mention that some iPods with the latest 1.2 firmware installed by iTunes 7 were experiencing problems with podcasts. Specifically, when playing a mono podcast, the iPod would restart. They also mentioned that the fix for this particular issue was to turn off the EQ settings. Stereo podcasts seem to be unaffected.

I dug up the discussion thread on Apple’s boards about this problem, and that seems to be about the gist of it. For my part, I pretty much never turn the EQ on, but even doing so I couldn’t duplicate the problem on either my 5G iPod or my 1G iPod nano.

It seems like a lot of the people suffering from this particular issue are on Windows, but there do seem to be voices from the Mac side as well. Any of our readers experienced random crashes or restarts with version 1.2?

I bought my first iPod (80GB) last week and have indeed found it to be suffering from the stated restart problem when playing (or even finishing playing) podcasts. I've not heard that the Equaliser settings were the problem and had been resolving the issue by setting the Start time of the podcast in iTunes to 0:01 and that seems to do the trick. However, I do still have some random shutdowns after the podcast finishes playing so I'll try the Equaliser tip to see if that does the job.

To be honest, I initially thought that it was because I was trying to use the iPod with an old G4 PowerBook with only USB 1.1.

Yes, this is a problem. Yes, it was making me insane. Recently, This American Life started releasing shows via podcast and they're in mono. Until Leo described the problem and the fix I was crashing my iPod any time I tried to play a show.

I too have this problem, I don't think it is really a fix though as I do use my equaliser, hope the next firmware recticfies it.
