Ever want a much easier way to access things alphabetically on your iPod? Or get frustrated because “The Decemberists” show up under the T section instead of the D section? Ok, I double-checked on my iPod, and you people who wrote in to say that the “the” is ignored, you’re right. Even still, this hack is nice for folks with large libraries.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to fix that. (Hint: it involves smart playlists.)

Who would want "The" bands to show up under "T"?
No one. That's the point.
on my iPod anything that starts with The is automaticly listed under whatever the next word begins with. i have never done anything special to get it to do this, so i don't understand the point of this?
On albums, albums that begin with "the" are listed under T, but on artists, bands that begin with "the" are listed correctly.
