An Australian bank, Commonwealth Bank, has just put together a survey outlining the price of the iPod nano in 55 different countries around the world, as a way to compare global currencies and purchasing power around the globe.
Not surprisingly, given the sorry state of the US dollar, we come out near the bottom of the list (read: cheapest), just above Hong Kong.
50. Canada $169.68
51. Singapore $167.31
52. Taiwan $165.82
53. Japan $154.21
54. U.S. $149.00
55. Hong Kong $148.12
So that begs the question, who’s on top?
1. Brazil $369.61
2. Bulgaria $318.60
3. Argentina $317.45
4. Israel $300.80
5. Peru $294.08
Lesson learned: Don’t go to Brazil to do your gadget shopping.
Here is price of the Nano in Jamaica (Caribbean):
US $1 = Jamaican $70
Multiply $70 Jamaican dollars by $149.99
Total: $10,500 for an iPod Nano in Jamaican dollars.
Yes, thats a lot of money here, the exchange rate is high.
... What about taxes?!
As a shopper in Canada, I have learned a lesson:
Time to go shopping in Buffalo.
I live in Brazil and i know how much an iPod can be expensive here...
In my iPhone i pay 1100 R$..
1 R$ = 1,88 US$
So my iPhone would be R$ 1.100 / US$ 1.88....
US$ 585,00
When Apple start sold here, it will be way more than this....
It sucks....
An unlocked iPhone here cost $35,000
the sorry state of the US dollar means that things should be more expensive in the US and less expensive in countries whose currencies are or are becoming stronger relative to the USD.
i'm from Hong Kong. so it's glad to know that we are enjoying the cheapest iPod in the world. ;)
Yes, it's a curious thing. I was looking into this because I wanted a new nano.
I was leaving Australia to come to France via China and the UK. I wrongly assumed China would be cheaper than Australia.
As for buying one in the UK or France - forget it! (Although UK less VAT is okay.)
Yay for eBay!
iPods and techs are relatively cheap where I'm from, the small dot of Singapore.
Tax is pretty low too.
in méxico an ipod nano video y up to $3000.
1 US $ = 11.50 mx $
The price for Brazil includes the absurd taxes the current leftist Brazilian (un)government will put its leftist hands on.
it's actually cheaper for a brazilian to fly to the united states and buy an apple product here than buying it in brazil. and yes, i am including the air fare.
an iPod nano at regular retail stores sells for R$1,100
if you take the 199.00 us price tag and multiply it with the current exchange rate of around 1.88, the price for the brazilian market would be only R$374.12.
so brazilians pay R$725.88 in taxes(that's 386 american dollars). and the country is still poor. where does that money go? i'm sure apple is not getting all of it?
". Argentina $317.45"
Ummm... no. It's way more than that, i can asure you. And that's because MacStation and others are overpricing.
