Embracing the obvious: iPods in popsicles

ipodpopsicle2.jpgFrankly, I’m not sure why no one’s made this patently obvious product decision in the past: stick 10,000 iPods shuffles in popsicles and give them away. I mean, it’s, like, the first thing I’d do if I ran an ice cream company — I’m sure you’d do the same.

So who’s the company that finally took this brave step? The Brazillian ice cream firm Kibon (the “Brazilian equivalent of Good Humor”), who did extensive testing and product preparations to make sure the iPods were intact when the customer consumed the popsicle itself. They wound up developing a fake popsicle-like material, which is designed to protect the iPod from humidity and other environmental threats. After successful testing, Apple actually gave the promotion a go-ahead.

The 10,000 iPodsicles (haha!) are indistinguishable from other Kibon popsicles, and will be randomly placed with the other products. When a lucky individual finds the fakesicle, he’ll be able to call an 800 number to collect the shuffle’s charger and manual.

(You know, it is summer in Brazil. If I was sweating in the heat and desperately in need of a yummy frozen treat, but was instead stuck with fake ice cream and an iPod, I might be a little pissed.)

Gizmodo has more in-depth details on the promotion, which is set to start December 18th. Wow, what a coincidence. I happen to be flying to Brazil that exact day, with the intention of buying lots and lots of popsicles for no particular reason. Sweet.

Why don't they just get a magnet and browse around until one of the ice creams stick?

You know those popsicle sticks that have the jokes printed on them? Well wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper to just print "You've won an iPod" on the stick? They have to mail you the charger anyway, why not just mail the whole thing?

Seems kinda silly, right?
