Apple: Over 100 million iPods served

Posted by Dan Moren | Monday, April 09, 2007 8:26 AM PT

100 million iPods100 million is what, in technical terms, is called a pretty big number. The estimated population of the US hit 300 million just last year, so that means that’s roughly one iPod to every three people in the US. It also makes the iPod, originally released in 2001, the fastest selling music player in history. The Sony Walkman took 14 years to reach the same point.

The celebratory press release features quotes from Steve Jobs, Mary J. Blige, John Mayer, and…Lance Armstrong?

“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”
That’s right: having an iPod means you are just like Lance Armstrong. Except, you know, without the seven Tour de France victories.

Meanwhile, Mayer took the rare opportunity to share his outspoken views on user interface design:

“Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums,” said John Mayer, GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. “Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept the spirit of what it means to be a music lover alive.”

Nowhere, however, does the statement point out that fully 50 million of iPods sold are in fact owned by me and Scott. What can I say? We go through a lot of iPods.

I was going to say, roughly 1/3 of the population is really, ...rough. I can count 6 iPods here. ;-)

I think Apple should do a commercial on celebrating the 100 million milestone. Something to the degree of "Think Different" (inspired by your latest post).

How about: " In 2001 people began to listen to music differently. Now, 100 million have joined. iPod, its better than "the Social"
