Man, Japan is not going to like this one. Just one day after we reported the Japanese government asking Apple to investigate the cause and severity of a sparking iPod nano, an iPod touch decided to follow in its little brother’s footsteps.
Engadget brings us word of an iPod touch burning up from the inside, even damaging the desk it was kept on. Apple did issue a free replacement to the grief-stricken user but that hardly solves the bigger problem at hand here.
iPods, specially of the flash memory variety, are personal devices that users generally keep close to their bodies—in jeans pockets, on armbands, etc.. Therefore, iPods randomly deciding to try their little chemistry experiments is a much more serious issue than all those laptops that gave in to the urge last year. What’s up with all these devices anyway?
If Sony batteries are the cause again, it’s high time they fixed their problems before someone gets seriously hurt. We’re hoping that this is a one-time issue and is not indicative of a larger problem with the entire iPod touch line. Someone ought to have taught them not to play with fire when they were young.

your mission, if you decide to accept it ..... this iPod will self destruct in 5 seconds. Good luck, Mr.Phelps
Given that this is the first I have ever heard of an iPod touch doing htis I would imagine it was not indicative of a problem. A useful bit of information would if this was manufactured recently. (possible design manufacturing change, manufacturer, battery, etc.)
