5G iPod is feeling blue too

iPod with bluetoothLast month, we passed along the work of an adventurous hardware hacker who adjusted their 4G iPod to add Bluetooth capabilities. Now, the ante has been raised as the selfsame fellow has revamped a 5G iPod with the wireless technology. As with the 4G version, the extra space required by the Bluetooth module requires a bit of finagling with the existing components: namely, removing the hard drive and replacing it with a Compact Flash card.

Just for kicks, he decided to replace the faceplate of the iPod with a transparent version, so you can see the inside in all of its blue-tinted glory. Other than those modifications, the iPod is just your stock 5G model. Further instructions are still forthcoming, but the total cost of the modifications was apparently about $115 for parts, plus somewhere between $30-$120 for the flash card depending on what capacity you want.

I’d still like to believe that integrated Bluetooth audio streaming is coming to the iPod line someday, but I won’t—and frankly can’t—hold my breath in the meantime.
