MW08: the musical Ladybug

Ladybugs are the most conflicting insects: On one hand, they’re bugs, and it’s my natural instinct to crush them. On the other hand, they’re “cute” by most modern definitions of the word, and many scorn the ruthless slaughtering of such innocent creatures. And one new product being demoed on the show floor is forcing me to re-evaluate my views on ladybugs, garnering a new appreciation for the colorful pests.

Yesterday I attended a press conference co-hosted by Element Skateboards and a company called Vestalife, where they previewed their new Ladybug iPod 2.1 speaker system. What’s so special about Just Another Speaker System? Well, all you need is to hold it in your hand to realize its genius: it’s compact, soft to the touch, light and durable, and very good-looking. It’s also feature-full: built-in 3” subwoofer, AV out, AUX in, a USB connector for charging and syncing your iPod, and can last up to ten hours on its replaceable batteries. They gave us one to play with, and while the audio quality isn’t the best we’ve heard from portable speakers, it’s certainly not bad for its size.

Where does Element Skateboards come in? They’re offering the Ladybug with paint jobs designed by their famous board artists, designed to appeal to the youth skateboarding demographic. There are two designs featured on the website: a black bug with a skull and a blue heart design.

According to the PR folks I talked to, the Ladybug will be available in select retailers — most likely Best Buy and Element Skateboard shops — by May March of ‘08. The regular Ladybug will cost $110, and the Element models will go for $125 — and all the proceeds from Element sales will go to their youth benefit organization, Elemental Awareness. Check the website for more details.
