According to an Italian newspaper interview with Dario Bucci, CEO of Intel Italy, the iPhone doesn’t use an Intel processor.
Q: The chips in the new Apple iPhone are made by Intel?
A: No, they’re Marvell’s. We sold our Xscale architecture to this company. However Apple is one of our best customers for flash memories and our NANDs are featured in the new handheld.
While AppleInsider reported on this, a Daring Fireball reader was able to confirm this translation. This basically means that there’s yet another version of Darwin floating around that works on ARM processors. If Apple were to supply an SDK, an iPhone emulator, complete with ARM processor emulation, should be part of the package. Apple likely has something like this in house, but prepping it for more public consumption could be holding up Apple’s decision to allow third-party development.
