What about iPhone.com?

Posted by Dan Moren | Thursday, February 22, 2007 9:54 AM PT

iPhone.comThe battle over the iPhone trademark? Resolved. John Chambers? Still alive by all accounts. Steve Jobs? Relaxing to the soothing sounds of Bob Dylan. But while this fixes the trademark issues, another theater of operations is still active: the Intertube.

Carl Howe at Blackfriars points out that iPhone.com belongs to neither Apple nor Cisco, but rather to a Canadian company called Nuvio that sells VoIP services under the moniker of “The Internet Phone Company.” Apple’s already got one fight looming in Canada with Comwave, who’s also been selling services under the iPhone name. Hey, wait a second: how come Comwave and Nuvio aren’t fighting each other? Sigh. Sometimes I just don’t understand Canada.

Meanwhile, Apple and Cisco have decided to take backup positions: Apple’s held iPhone.org since 1999; Cisco has owned iPhone.net since 1998. Both would probably like to get their hands on iPhone.com, especially Cisco: a quick Google for “iPhone” shows that Apple’s iPhone page is ranked #1; there’s no mention of Cisco until page two. Ouch. I think we know who came out ahead here. I sure hope John Chambers’s life was worth all that.

Peace, love, and maple syrup, eh? It's too cold up here to squabble over things like trademarks. We're too busy snowboarding.

Hey, that's a Mac on the iPhone.com page! Not that it matters...

Oh, and is that a lightsaber laying next to the papers?
