iPhone’s mystery twelfth app revealed to be the downfall of all mankind

YouTube on iPhoneThey said it didn’t exist. That it was a mere legend. That the rumors whispered in the night were nothing more than the deranged rantings of madmen. The mysterious twelfth iPhone app, the one too terrible to look upon, whose use would instantly destroy whoever tapped its icon.

Well, they were partially right. For the twelfth app has been revealed, and I name it thusly: YouTube, defiler of worlds.

The love affair between Apple and Google continues as the video portal slowly insinuates its way into pretty much every product line Apple makes. The Mac went first, then the Apple TV, now the iPhone. With YouTube re-encoding all of their content in the H.264 codec, it’s a snap for Apple to provide hooks for their devices. The iPod at the moment lacks the only direct connection to the Tube, but I’d imagine that’s coming soon enough.

It’s a sensible partnership: Apple has the perfect platform, but it’s one that needs content. YouTube has the content, but wants to reach beyond the computer screen. Together, they will obliterate the competition—and our sense of self-worth with many many videos of cats chasing string and skateboarding dogs.

This YouTube announcement nicely emphasizes why it would be nice to have third-party application support on the iPhone.

Why did Apple choose to create an application for content which is available through a Web site already? Because, by doing so they will be able to use custom controls and layouts which are not possible through a Web interface.

Similarly, although much of the content which is served through the iPhone may be sent over HTTP, many applications would benefit from a custom front end.

Youtube for iPhone? Is this really a killer application?

What about the other direction - sending videos from the iPhone to Youtube for instant sharing to millions of viewers?

Didn't you hear Jobs at Macworld in January? One bad app could bring down the AT&T cell network.

(momentary pause to roll eyes)

There have been many suggestions that Apple got AT&T to bend over and take it (so to speak) to get the iPhone, and I think the no (real) apps on the iPhone is us starting seeing how far Apple had to bend over for AT&T. How nice for AT&T that the only way to use apps is a method that requires constant data transfers for the phone user to get charged for...

Love the retro TV icon.
