iPhone will require iTunes account (and other sundry information)

iphonemultitouch.jpgIf nothing else, the iPhone has clearly already established itself as the Marcia Brady of Apple’s product family. “iPhone, iPhone, iPhone.” Even Steve couldn’t resist throwing some iPhone references into his keynote yesterday, and some more details have showed up too.

For example, an email went out this morning to those who’d registered with Apple their interest in the iPhone. It contained some interesting, previously unknown details, such as:

To set up your iPhone, you’ll need an account with Apple’s iTunes Store. If you already have an iTunes account, make sure you know your account name and password. If you don’t have an account, you should set one up now to save time later. To set up an account, launch iTunes, select the iTunes Store, and click the Sign In button in the upper right corner of iTunes. Sign in and you’re ready to go.
Huh. Color me intrigued (it’s close to burnt sienna). Why would the iPhone require an iTunes Store account?

Also, we know that iTunes will handle not only your media, but also your iPhone’s email setup, syncing your existing account settings from Mail or Outlook. Contacts can be synced from Address Book, Yahoo! Address Book, or Entourage (or Outlook Express and Outlook on a PC); calendars can come from iCal or Entourage (or Outlook on a PC). And besides all the usual web mail services, like GMail, Yahoo, and .Mac, iPhone will work fine with anything using POP or IMAP. Your photos are also synced by iTunes, which pulls them from iPhoto on the Mac, and Adobe Photoshop Elements or Photoshop Album, or a picture folder on the PC (no Picasa integration?).

Finally, if you’re looking for even more info on the iPhone, Apple updated the iPhone portion of their website when they did the complete overhaul yesterday. You now have a choice to view several of the videos from either a front view, or an angled view, and they’ve added a few new demonstrations on the Multi-Touch technology, OS X, and the iPhone’s built-in Sensors.

[Double hat tip to Walt]

Update: The text of the email, along with spiffy pictures of the iPhone, is now available on Apple’s web site.

Great... Now people in countries without an iTunes Store are left in the dark. Thanks Apple...

But will there be a price difference between countries in the EU? ;-)

Yeah, I hope that Slovenia (for some odd reason) gets the lowest prices over Vodafone or something. Let's say something around 5€ would just do the trick. ;-)
