Hardest package not to open, ever.

Posted by David Dahlquist | Friday, June 06, 2008 5:00 PM PT

apple 3g aussie.jpgFaithful readers, I ask you this agonizing question: If you had shipped to you a mysterious brown package that almost certainly contained the unreleased iPhone 3G, would you open it even if it meant exposing yourself to a world of legal hurt from Apple itself? Or would you wait the painstaking, sure-to-feel-like-an-eternity, 4 days until you were legally allowed to pry it open?

This is the dilemma Australian resellers are facing, as they have reportedly begin receiving mysterious packages from Apple with a warning across the top that opening the boxes before June 10th would be a violation of their non-disclosure agreements with the company.

June 10th in Australia just so happens to be right around the time of Steve J’s June 9th WWDC keynote in the US, and we all know what he’s expected to announce there, yes? Put two and two together, and you get… demonstration 3G iPhone’s meant to be displayed by Australian resellers immediately after the much anticipated announcement!

Now back to the question at hand. I’d personally open that bad boy up, take a quick, innocent peak, just to make sure everything is intact, and then seal it back up like nothing ever happened. That’s harmless enough, right?

About as harmless as using a mirror to peek up a woman's skirt. Don't do it.

Oh I have been running that through my head since I read the article. Maybe I could just open the bottom of the box ever so carefully. I mean, it's a long weekend here in Australia, who would ever know. Go out and buy some sticky tape to match the one the box is sealed with, so I can re-seal the box after opening.

Or use steam to melt the glue and remove the tape without damaging it. Maybe even damage the box and say that the courier delivered it like that and I had to check that everything was in there. Oh there are so many possibilities. Alas, I don't have one of these brown boxes. So I will have to wait till Tuesday. I have never wanted a long weekend to go so fast.

I don't think it's worth having your reseller license possibly revoked if caught. You already know what's in the box and it is only 4 days before you're legally allowed to open it. Think Smart.

Oh that bad boy would so be opened then re-sealed. Of course I would not reveal to anyone else what was in that box.

There's no need to open it early.

But, if you're really curious, x-ray seems the way to go without opening it.

But wouldn't X-Rays harm the phones? Or the phones that are supposed to be in the box?

Maybe I would open it, while on the toilet, the have a look at what's in it, then re-seal it (with dunno what), and then tell nobody, so ... theoretically I wouldn't harm the NDA.

Am I wrong? If I don't tell what I know it's still a form of non-disclosure, isn't it?

I'm sure buzzers and alarms would sound at Apple Headquarters with gps locations being shown where the offender is located the moment a brown box is opened.

That or an elaborate hoax and all that is inside are those springy snakes you find in the random can of beans.

Does the warning specify that it is forbidden to X-ray the package?

if this was really sent from Apple Australia, wouldn't they have typed "10 June" instead of "June 10th" on the envelope?

and why put the warning and postage on the BOTTOM of the box?

looks like a fake

and a sloppy one at that

I would have opened it in about ten seconds after receiving it. Enjoy playing with your Big Brown Package From Apple.

Actually, this package has already been opened by some.

I just happened to come on a website which showed pictures of the package opened.

http://www.web-mobile.net/

It's a French website though but what interests people here are the pictures.

Also, some new pics and news will be revealed on that very website tonight, as announced by the webmaster.

For the specs, they say (I speak French, so here the translation) :

There'll be a 16 and 32 Go model. Three colors available (Black, white and Red (though they're not 100% sure about the (Product) RED)). And there'll be a GPS.

They also mention that the price of the iPhone V2 is gonna be impressive (in the GOOD way).

I do not own this website, nor I wanna publicize it. I just thought it'd be interesting to share this with you who are all waiting eagerly for the new version of the iPhone.

Have a good day !

I'm a bit confused, I guess. Are there Apple iPhone Police lurking about to randomly check the packages for compliance? How would a reseller get caught opening this thing before June 10th?

It's like the 1st Indiana Jones. If you opened the box before June 10th, strange ghosts will fly around the store and your face will get sucked into the box and your head will blow up.
