AT&T prepares for launch: stanchions, go

attmemo.jpgThe iPhone has a way of magnifying even the most insignificant issues. Take, for exmaple, this leaked AT&T document that explains the crowd control procedures for the 6PM June 29th launch, which suggests that stores might want to use stanchions (those posts and ropes that herd you through the labyrinthine innards of airports and other liens) to keep customers lined up.

Good heavens. Stanchions? For keeping people in line? In related news: ice hockey players will be playing their games on ice. Dogs are living with dogs! Cats are living with cats! It’s unmadness!

Seriously, though. The document calls for 24 feet of chains, which some are calling optimistic (in a snide, sarcastic manner). Admittedly, that would be rather insubstantial for controlling something on the scale of the Wii and PlayStation 3 lines we saw last year, but it’s hard to know exactly how many people are likely to show up at any given location. Eleventy billion? 4? The square root of -1?

This memo also says that stores will close at 4:30PM to prep for launch, re-open at 6PM to the unwashed masses (that’s me!) and will remain open to 10PM. Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t been thoughtful enough to leak any documents about their own stores, so it’s anybody’s guess at this point.

My local store (Bridgewater, NJ) said that they would be closing early to prepare the store for the event and then re-opening at 6:00.
