Apple to Greenpeace: Do you like apples?

Greenpeace and AppleYou didn’t think Apple was just going to let Greenpeace’s latest salvo just fly by, did you? Not bloody likely. Responding to claims that the iPhone contains toxic chemicals, Apple this morning told our siblings over at Macworld that the iPhone “complies with RoHS [Restriction of Hazardous Substances], the world’s toughest restrictions on toxic substances in electronics.” Apple also reiterated its commitment to eliminating PVC and brominated flame retardants by the end of 2008.

However, even when prompted and offered a one-time relaxation of the restriction on clichéd retorts, the spokesperson declined to add “How do you like them apples?”

And, of course, this would not seem to have any effect on the potential lawsuit brewing from the Center for Environmental Health, who yesterday gave Apple 60 days legal notice that they would sue unless Apple agreed to reduce its use of phthalates in the iPhone’s construction.

This is the part that doesn't make sense to me. Apple has announced plans to eliminate these compounds from their products. These groups state their goal is to have companies eliminate these compounds. Thus, they have already achieved a victory.

What I suspect is that their strategy is to go after a company who already has a plan in place so that they can declare "victory" in a year when Apple's plan runs its course.

It would be kind of like me starting to petition for Seattle to build a light rail transit system and then to declare victory in two years when it opens, even though the system has been under constructions for a decade already.

Sometimes I would like to suggest to all these eco-talibans that the most dangerous substance as cause of cancer is oxygen: the unquestionable proof of this statement lies in the fact that whoever stopped breathing oxygen never died of cancer!

So the iPhone complies with hazardous materials regulations. This would be the regulations put in the place by the US Federal Government, the one run by Bush?

I'm a mac owner but you fanboys make me want to puke!

@Emma: Actually, Apple is saying that the iPhone complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (or RoHS), which was enacted by the European Union in 2003. It has nothing to do with US regulations.

@Emma: beware of puking!
Vomit contains hydrochloric acid, an aggressive substance far more dangerous than phthalates, and some environmental organization might sue you !
