Yahoo! Mail notices Safari; compatibility ensues

Yahoo! Mail logoRyan K., Community Manager for Yahoo! Mail, posted on a company-owned blog yesterday to let the world know that the new version of Yahoo! Mail, powered by AJAXy goodness, is now compatible with Safari 3 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 and later.

Before yesterday, whenever you visited the web interface of your Yahoo! Mail account using Safari, it politely requested you to either use the classic version or return later when you had Firefox installed and running. Now, no matter how politely you say that, it’s bound to hurt. It’s not the nineties anymore, people—Mac users won’t stand for second class treatment anymore.

Yahoo’s realized this and has worked out whatever issues were causing friction between the two parties. Safari and Yahoo! Mail are pals now and, incidentally, Yahoo just refused to be bullied by Microsoft into a buyout just a couple of days ago. That’s enough reason to deserve some love from Mac users, don’t you think?

According to Yahoo!, this latest development will be implemented throughout the system over the next couple of weeks, so if you still can’t access the AJAX-powered Yahoo! Mail, remember that just a little bit of patience will go a long way.

I tried it out and it still warned me that I’m using an unsupported browser (Safari 3.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.5.2—the latest and greatest, baby) but it gave me the option to use the new version of Yahoo! Mail nevertheless and it seems to be working fine.

Now if only they could give away IMAP access for free, they might actually have a decent email service on their hands. Ah well, one thing at a time, I guess.

Let us know if the new Yahoo! Mail is working for you.

Using the new version.
Everything's working just fine.
Even the chat. And it looks way better than the classic one. But, I wish I could add Yahoo to Mail.app. Besides that, all's cool.

Now hopefully Gmail will follow suit.

What's there to follow? I haven't noticed any obvious incompatibility between Gmail and Safari...
