The day the humor died: CARS to drive off into the sunset?

Posted by Dan Moren | Friday, February 01, 2008 8:40 AM PT

CARS sunsetI finally got around to subscribing to the Crazy Apple Rumor Site’s RSS feed post-Macworld Expo—just in time for Editor in Chief John Moltz to announce that the site would be going on hiatus for the indeterminate future. It’s kind of like when I bought a PowerMac G3 two weeks before the PowerMac G4 came out. Only, er, worse. Yeah.

Despite my non-subscription, I’d been reading and enjoying CARS for some time before that. I had the pleasure of meeting John for the first time at this past Expo, and he’s just as nice, funny, and crazy-eyed in person as you’d think.

So, in honor of CARS’s last day, Brent Simmons of NetNewsWire infamy suggested we recall our favorite memories of CARS’s past. I’ve had the, um, honor of appearing in half a dozen posts or so, from my initial frantic search for virgins, to my recent coke-fueled shootout, but I think I’ll miss ribbing Gruber about the Yankees most of all.

Hopefully, CARS’s little break won’t mean that we’ll be utterly deprived of our Moltz quota; I’m sure he’ll still be popping up in the pages of Macworld or showing up on NPR to talk about sexbots. If nothing else, you can always go read his Twitter feed; really, it’s like super-condensed CARS.

Personally, I think Microsoft ought to be offering $44.6 billion to keep CARS afloat. In fact, Moltz is so desperate he’d probably take a piddling 1% of that. Come on Microsoft, step up. It’s not like you can’t afford it.

Meanwhile, in these dark times, MacUser will do its utmost to keep some part of the spirit of CARS alive. I remind you that it’s up to each and everyone of us keep a little bit of Moltz inside us all.

Dibs on the crazy eyes.

In the spirit of CARS,

I never really warmed up to the humour on CARS because I often got the feeling that it was a bit juvenile. Especially the "first post" comments. I much preferred "As the Apple Turns" before they disappeared.

I think I've discovered the best live Apple humour site: check out http://www.iphonesavior.com/

"a little bit of Moltz inside us"?

Now, that's just creepy!

Well, actually, eleventh post is the coveted one among CARS regulars.

Not that I ever got it myself, mind you. By the time I usually check in, somebody's already used my toothbrush.

First to use the phrase, "egregious error."

I sure am gonna miss CARS.

It was the only place where I could be myself, naked, and not get arrested.

Well I wasn't aware of CARS for very long and I never got to meet any of the sexbots personally but I did enjoy the free flow of...ah..semi-conscienceness. John and Jack Miller were able to tap into that funny strangeness that many of us have. One of the oddest things to me was the creepy resemblance the Entity had to what my ex-father-in-law thought he was.
