After several failed experiments with the browser that used to be the browser, Netscape has kicked the bucket. While it’s not shocking, I figured this would drag out for a few more years, at least until AOL itself shriveled up and disappeared as well. Maybe that will be next year’s resolution.
AOL will release security updated for the latest version of the software (number 9) until February 1st. Of this year. Short notice for corporate and organizational users? You bet. Firefox (and the suite version Seamonkey) remain viable alternative for diehard users, but it’s still a landmark event in the history of the internet. I think I’d go so far as to say that Netscape was the catalyzing element that consumerized the web. (Yes, I’m fully aware of Mosaic, but it wasn’t quite there yet for most people.)
Take a moment for Netscape…. Just a short one.

Grin--I remember when I first joined AOL--it had less that 500,000 members, and all the pundits were predicting that it would close down 'any day now'
Well...with quite a few MILLION users now and still growing--albeit more slowly--I would not hold your breath waiting for its demise!
The announce ment from Netscape says it is through.
However Firefox is Mozilla based and the apparent successor.
