MobileMe gets its head out of the clouds

medotcom.jpgIn case you’ve been waiting on the edge of your seat for the last day or so, it’s true: MobileMe is officially up. Apple sent a 1.1 software update package for MobileMe down the pipes, but as usual, information was typically scarce:

The Mac OS X Update For MobileMe is recommended for users running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 and includes general system fixes that enhance your Mac for MobileMe.

I’ve been half-using MobileMe for the last couple days, but it really started to come together this morning (after a brief mishap where I had to delete all my bookmarks—don’t ask). Honestly, when you’ve got it all up and running, it works pretty damn well. There’s nothing like changing your best friend’s picture on your iPhone and having it automagically change in your Address Book too.

So far, my impressions of the web apps are mostly favorable, though they’ve been awfully slow at times, especially the iDisk page, which often seems to load for me by default. Oh well. I for one welcome our new me.com overlords.

How about you, dear readers: has MobileYou settled down for the most part, or are you still running into problems?

It is now working perfectly for me!!! I love it. Of course I was a google man first, never a .mac fan. But now I am all about ME.

I like the promise of MobileMe. It actually seems pretty ambitious. If anyone can pull it off I would bet on Apple. However I have had a LOT of trouble so far. I'll give them another week or so before I start to get upset.

I am finding the log-in process extremely frustrating as a new user. In an attempt to fix this I have changed the password and had notification that this was accepted, logged in once via System Preferences and using Safari, but now it fails (same username, same password). This is just on the computer. Other devices do not want to know. As a new user of Mobile Me I am not impressed thus far and I really wanted to be.

For the most part, it's working great for me. There are still a few kinks (e.g., subscribed calendars not syncing, deleted mail not being removed from web app inbox, etc.), but otherwise it seems to be working well.

iWeb users are having a lot of problems with this update. Comments are not being display, iWeb says that it cannot be updated (error, error, etc.), some blogs have disappeared.
very bad for mac reputation!
Thanks, that I'm not running any business through iWeb.

Please, report this in your Blog so that we can be hear by macintosh.

After loosing 560 contact and all my calendars and having to endure the ugliest purple disk icon on my desktop I finally get to enjoy mobileme. It seems to be working nicely now though.

I'd love to hear from someone using MobileMe in a purely PC environment using either a 3G or older iPhone with Outlook.

Is it worth it?

For the most part it is working great. The only problem I have is that my Mac only seems to get updates about every 15 minutes. I have MobileMe set to sync automatically in System Preferences.

I mean, I thought the whole enchilada was supposed to be Push. It seems to me that my MacBook is still sending the request for updates, which makes it Pull.

Do I not have MobileMe set up correctly? Could MacUser possibly write a "How to ensure MobileMe is set up properly" post?

@MacGeek Pro: So, I swear I read somewhere that the "Automatically" sync option means that your Mac gets changes every 15 minutes (unless you trigger a sync before that manually or change a contact/calendar info) and that "push" only applies to the iPhone. But I can't find the reference (and Apple's support search is wacked out at present). I'll see if I can't dig that up, though.

I had two great experiences with Mobile Me these past few days.

After being the first one in line to buy the iPhone I went home to sync my contacts and apps that I had downloaded. with the itunes freeze I was unable to register my iPhone and thus not being able to sync my contacts. I added my mobileMe address into mail, and i was surprised to see my contacts sync! I somehow forgot about this great feature.

Sadly, I had to take my iPhone to be replaced because it was faulty. 2:45pm today was the earliest appointment I could get at the Genius bar (from friday). Got a new iPhone, had no contacts so i quickly added my account and was able to call and find where my friend was within the mall.

I've noticed the same thing about the push not really applying to the Mac, but it seems to work good for the iPhone. I've been using the Web Gallery since it came out and have noticed that when I try to use it at work with IE7 on a PC it is very slow. I'm curious to try out the Mail app when I go back to work Monday. If this works as well on a PC, it may be compelling to switch email from Gmail, but otherwise, it is not because the Gmail web interface works so well across platforms and is IMAP. It's just missing the Push. I'd really like to have that since I have my friends send picture messages through email to compensate for no MMS on the iPhone. If I could get instant notification I wouldn't even notice MMS was gone.

Unfortunately, I read the same thing Dan M did - 15 minutes. It was in the little intro video that popped up once you eventually got signed in. They sort of slid over it the second time they mentioned it in the video by saying something like "updates in minutes" or "immediate updates" (I forget the exact verbiage and clicked "Don't show me this again ever - really, ever!"). For all the great things Apple does, honestly, why do they always come up just a little short? It's like the Apple customers are the Prom girl hopefuls, and Apple is the geek that soils before he spoils...I know the old stage/magician's line - "keep 'em wanting more", but come on - drive it all the way home at least once, will ya? We promise, we'll keep coming back :)

Published my first photo web gallery to me.com. Seems to be working okay.

Congratulations Apple. You've become Microsoft. This "update" is horrible. Mail no longer works properly for me and quite frankly I don't see the point of any of this. Is there any way to undo the mobileme update?

Mobile Me isn't working on a PC if you use Explorer. Try to get a Mac-phobic IT group to allow Safari or other on the corporate network. It won't happen. Every time I try to access my "Me" webpage, I get an error page telling me I have to use Safari et al. I could log on to .mac from any computer and get my mail, groups etc, without any problem at all.
