External MacBook battery options

PortablepowerstationI own two batteries for my MacBook Pro, which cost me quite a pretty penny to only double my battery life. Not to mention the batteries Apple makes are fragile, awkward (and sometimes difficult) to replace, and interrupt your workflow. That’s why I was excited when I learned that Battery Geek has started shipping external batteries for the MacBook/Pro as of today.

The external battery is a Li-ion 140 watt/hr “Portable Power Station” which can be used with an optional MagSafe connector for your Intel Mac laptop. The device also powers iBooks, PowerBooks, Windows laptops, cell phones and iPods. According to Battery Geek the MacBook Pro can last up to 6 additional hours when running on the external battery, which currently costs $350. It’s nice to finally have some power options!

$350????? Holy crap! I could make my own for a little more than 10% of that cost.

Is this the first instance of a third party magsafe connector? Someone with a public platform, say MacUser or MacWorld, needs to find out why there are no magsafe connectors for car/airline/etc. Like why doesn't the iGo have a magsafe tip?

Dan-- Lithium batteries aren't that cheap. You might be able to put together 140 WH of lithium batteries for something less than $350, but you wouldn't be able to include the charger, the multi-output DC-DC converter, all the adapter tips, etc.

Look up prices for lithium batteries, you'll see what I mean. I can't see how to get 140 WH of lithium batteries for less than $200 or so. That's a long way from the "10%" you claim.
