CrossOver for Mac offers something very compelling for Mac users (well, Intel Mac users): the ability to run Windows applications in Mac OS X without Windows. It’s based upon Wine and basically remaps Windows API calls to the appropriate *nix calls.
Quite simply, it’s a great way to run that one little program that you absolutely need. It doesn’t work with all applications (games spring to mind), but for some, this is a way to get done what they need without having to support Microsoft. The public beta is being offered today for download.
I’ll be playing with it today and should have a post describing my experiences later.
If you've got a copy of FrameMaker around, it'd be great if you could check it out under Crossover and see what that Bronze rating means.
Since Adobe refused to port FrameMaker to OS X and dropped the Mac Classic version, it's been one of the few applications that lacks a good OS X replacement. There's nothing that can handle large, complex documents as well as it does.
And if Adobe India, which now supports the Windows version is clever, they'll help Wine/Crossover improve the compatibility.
