#1 MacBook problem: gaming

Posted by Scott Silverman | Saturday, June 03, 2006 2:12 PM PT

Blackmacbookside-2Apple’s new MacBooks are all-around winners in my ibook. Well, except for one thing: graphics. If it weren’t for the integrated graphics of the MacBook line, I would probably be writing this blog entry from a shiny new MacBook. My concerns lie mostly in the image processing and video editing departments, but for many, their area of concern is gaming.

If this happens to be your area of concern as well, you’re in luck. Yesterday, Rob Griffiths (of the infamous Macworld) put the MacBook’s integrated graphics to the test of gaming. For a full immersion into MacBook gaming be sure to read his report, but for those of you looking for the shortcuts in life, I drafted up a brief summary:

  1. If you’re looking for the ultimate gaming machine to play the latest and greatest games, look elsewhere. The MacBook’s integrated graphics can’t handle it.
  2. Add RAM. Because the MB’s integrated graphics share RAM with the system, the more RAM in the computer, the better the graphics performance will be (Rob ran some test with 2GB of RAM).
  3. For an overview of some games you can and can’t play, be sure to check out Rob’s full report.
