More iPhone wishes…

closediphone.jpgSo we know the iPhone is coming. We know it will have more features than the Death Star, and probably cost the same as well ($500 went much further “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”). It will surely elate the fanboys, please the followers, quell the skeptics, and intrigue the cynics. But will it appease the nitpickers? We nitpickers tend to have insatiable desires for the features that don’t even cross the mind of those who would disregard them as useless. Here’s what I need to see:

  • Adjustable Snooze Alarm Clock: Sometimes, I want to sleep in for 5 minutes, and sometimes I need another 24 hours to cleanse the circadian palate. Many alarm clocks try to straddle the wants of most consumers by including an awkward number, such as a seven minute snooze. I want control though.
  • Chameleon Tip Calculator: Nothing is so tactless as whipping out your phone to try to determine your server’s gratuity, especially at a fine dining establishment with a menu containing words like cou d’oie (that dish, by the way, is the neck skin of a goose, stuffed like a sausage). If the iPhone can mask my socio-mathematical ineptitude, I’d be happy
  • Push-to-talk No More: Everytime I hear that trademark ::beep beep::, I have to prepare myself for the inevitable barage of poorly constructed efforts at communicating, strewn about with clumsy insertions of profanity and prepositional cabooses aplenty. Make it stop, please.
So that’s the word from this end of the spectrum. Any specialized features that you need to see in the iPhone?

A phone that "just works".

See that missing icon? I want that to say iChat. I don't use SMS, but I often do use IM. They don't have to make it AV at first...

but while I'm dreaming, since iChat in Leopard is going to have remote desktop...

Chameleon tip calculator? How is that different from a calculator?

The iPhone is bound to be a phenomenon, but I don't see how it can kill PTT (push-to-talk) on other phones on other services.

My desires from most important to least: VPN, PocketQuicken (optimized interface for the iPhone that syncs with Quicken), the ability to hook a 30 pin-30 pin cable to my iPod and watch the videos stored on its 80GB on the iPhone's 3.5" display.

Oh, and I want iWork '07 to include an iPhone version of all the apps.

Camera as bar code reader (its a computer, right?)... lots you could do with cataloging, tracking, shopping.
Ditto on the iWork versions. I hear PDF is on the way... So how about at least adding PDF "forms".

Dude! Tip Calculator? 20% is the norm for good service right? So you take the total bill, move the decimal point one place to the left and double it. Bad service don't double it just give the 10%. Somewhere in between? well you figure it out.
