CNBC iPhonePeople often accuse the blogosphere of being irresponsible journalists and rumormongers (but never irresponsible rumormongers…where’s the love?). Well, I’m here to tell you the ugly, ugly truth: it’s true. But the mainstream media isn’t much better.

Yesterday, I caught this clip from YouTube of CNBC’s On the Money discussing Apple’s iPhone. You know, the iPhone that Apple has never ever mentioned. Ever. Of course, Apple’s penchant for secrecy makes it a difficult proposition to discuss anything that’s not currently shipping, but CNBC apparently has decided that’s a minor detail. And so, they proceed to report not only the non-existent iPhone, but the second non-existent version of the iPhone.

Everything in this CNBC report is based on rumor and hearsay, but that doesn’t stop them from reporting it as if it were solid fact. Their apparently sole source for the report is none other than analyst Shaw Wu, whose predictions have been wrong far more than they’ve been right, and whose job seems to consist largely of reading Think Secret all day and issuing press releases.

If Apple does not release an iPhone at Macworld, I predict there will be a huge outcry from the media about Apple disappointing everybody (optionally: “again”). As far as I’m concerned, the media will have nobody to blame except themselves. They’re like a kid who’s all excited about getting a real, working jetpack for Christmas, only to throw a fit when all they get is candy and a Nerf football. Why not just enjoy the football, eh? You could use the exercise anyway.

I was suprised when I heard Jay Leno make a joke last night about "Apple's new iPhone" and thought I had missed something during the day. The joke itself was funny, even if it doesn't exist yet (not an exact quote): "Apple's new iPhone will be a combination of a cell phone and an iPod. Why not just call it what it really will be, an iCarAccident."
