Rob Enderle, analyst, columnist, frequent contributor to The Mac Observer’s Apple Death Knell Counter, and the only pundit crazy enough to give John Dvorak a run for his money, is at it again. Enderle’s latest article in TechNewsWorld asks “What if Microsoft Bought Apple?” But that’s only the first stop on the #63 bus to Crazytown (which is considerably less enjoyable than the trip to Funkytown).
Enderle suggests that both companies could help each other with their problems, but I have a hard time taking his arguments seriously when he throws out gems like:”Apple’s machines are long on usability but short on interoperability, which is almost the mirror opposite of Microsoft products like Media Center.” In the words of Lewis Black, “don’t think about that too long, or blood will shoot out your nose.”
Enderle suggests that Microsoft could help Apple improve its marketshare, a fallacy that we’ve seen before—this strange idea that what Apple needs to “succeed” is to be more like Microsoft. No, Apple isn’t Microsoft, and I sincerely hope it never will be. And while Steve Jobs’s office may not be wallpapered in Benajmins, I would hardly say Apple isn’t succeeding.
Let me leave you with this last thought, courtesy of Mr. Enderle: “Imagine what would result if a new Apple OS was based on the new Windows kernel rather than on Unix.”
I don’t know about you, but my version includes zombies.
