Now you see the Chapters menu…now you don’t!

Podcast MenuAt this point, iTunes 7’s UI is the equivalent of those nutballs who sell used cars on TV. I once saw a guy smash a crowbar through a windshield and then set the hood of the car on fire. Somehow this was supposed to get me to buy a car from him.

Anyway, you’re probably used to OS X’s menubar changing depending on which application you’re in. After all, this has been pretty standard behavior since the original version of the MacOS. On rare occasion, the menubar changes based on what windows are open or in the foreground in a single application (AppleWorks does this, for example).

But iTunes 7 adds or removes a menu based on what kind of track you’re playing. Specifically, enhanced podcasts. In the previous versions of iTunes, when you were playing an enhanced podcast, a drop-down menu of the podcast’s chapters appeared in the track display. In iTunes 7, this has become a “Chapters” menu in the menubar. I find this kind of insane and annoying and I didn’t even notice it until I came across it on Mac OS X Hints this morning. Chalk up another for non-standard UI interfaces.
