Apple store mentions quad-core systems again

Quad-Core GaffeIs there something you want to tell us, Apple? Something about new Macs? Really? You sure? Because your website seems to say otherwise. For the second time this month, an apparent slip up on an Apple website suggests that Macs featuring quad-core Intel processors are on their way. This time, the culprit is the Apple Store’s page on Creative Suite 3. The text, which has not yet been corrected as of this writing, reads:

Every new Mac features powerful dual-core or quad-core Intel processors, the world’s most advanced operating system, and more. [Emphasis added]
The three systems displayed below that are the iMac, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, none of which have quad-core systems. At this point, we’ve got to say we’d advise you not to bet against the appearance of 8-core Mac Pros at the NAB event on April 15th. Unless you’re betting with us, in which case, sure, we’ll take your money.

Um... the current powermacs are already quad core. 2 cores per chip... 2 chips.

Quad Core.

OOPS!

If you read the actual specs listed, they mean quad core, referencing two dual core processors. It's just a matter of symantecs. (Two single processors are referred to as dual core).

Apple has already been calling two dual-core chips on a machine as "quad core." See the Mac Pro page as reference: http://www.apple.com/macpro/ . With the introduction of 4 cores on a chip being called "quad core" by Intel and others, confusion and rumors abound. Nothing to see here folks.

I'll stick with what I wrote above; I don't believe this is merely Apple referring to the fact that the Mac Pros have four cores. There's a big difference between a four-core system, which on the Mac Pro page Apple is quite clear to point out is two dual-core chips, and "quad-core Intel processors."

I'm sure Dan is right. Given the other recent blunder, and the fact that Intel is indeed delivering 4 core processors, it stands to reason they will make their way into our Macs. No surprise there. And there won't be. The days of "by the way, here's the latest and greatest processor" are gone. The whole world knows about the latest and greatest processors before they make their way into our favorite computers. That's just a fact of life now that we use Intel. Now that we know when they are available, it becomes a matter of when will Apple get around to using them.

It has now been corrected:

'Every new Mac features powerful dual-core or quad-core Intel processing, the world's most advanced operating system, and more. Build your Mac to your exact specifications, or start with our recommended configurations that are optimized for Creative Suite 3."

However, if we are to be completely correct it should read "quad core processing, rather than "quad-core" processing. But Apple has made mistakes with the hyphens before.
