The iSight that wouldn’t die…

Posted by Pat Nakajima | Monday, November 20, 2006 12:42 PM PT

iSightWe’ve talked about this before, but the amount of time that’s gone by, plus the fact that it involves me, has given me reason to bring the topic back up. So here’s the deal. I’ve been on the fence recently about whether or not to get an iSight. After all, I feel like they’re a dying breed. With internal iSights in almost all of the new Macs that are being sold today, and almost no updates to the product (besides the halt of sales in Europe over environmental concernts), it feels like a lame duck product.

Either Apple will kiss the iSight goodbye, or it will introduce a new version for the Mac Pro set. I can’t imagine the current product remaining on the market for much longer. Since I felt the sting of the Steve Jobs “product upgrade/kiss of death” especially hard last Christmas with my brand new Powerbook G4 reaching my doorstep about a week before the MacBook Pro’s were introduced, I’m reluctant to purchase.

Do any of you have any keen advice for a wary shopper?

Just buy one. They are way more functional than the built-ins, and get a Griffin SightLight with it. Who cares if they discontinue? You will if you don't get one.
