Some Mac Pros may emit toxic gas

macprogas.jpgIs your Mac Pro emitting toxic gases? Sure, it might just seem like an easy way to convince your work to let you take a bit of a vacation or a diabolical plan by some sort of supervillain. But reports earlier this week in French publication Libération suggested that Mac Pros might be releasing nasty fumes including benzene.

Our colleagues at the Mothership contacted Apple HQ, where spokesperson Bill Evans said:

“We have not found anything that supports this claim, but continue to investigate it for the customer.”

Good…news? Benzene’s a nasty piece of work that can lead to a variety of illnesses after prolonged exposure, including cancer. The claim seems to specifically point to Mac Pros built before 2008, and rests primarily on the claims of one scientist who tested a sample of the gas. Obviously, the claim is serious enough for Apple to want to, er, clear the air, but don’t go throwing your Mac Pro away until there’s more concrete info, okay?

And to think, all this time Dan's been blaming the dog for that smell...

The benzene was coming from the French scientist, not the Mac Pro!
