Many have learned that we sometimes can predict the direction of Apple products by watching the announcements of their suppliers. So when Samsung announced this morning that it has sampled the world’s first 16-gigabit NAND flash memory chip, my thoughts immediately turn to the iPod, a MacBook with integrated flash memory, and none other than the “why phone.”
This 16Gbit chip has a 2GB capacity but boasts two highly important features: speed and size—the first is fast and the second is small. It’s manufactured using a an ultra-dense 50-nanometer process, which will offer more capacity without sacrificing speed. In fact, because the new chip has twice the page memory of current model chips, it will effectively double the read speed and increase the write speed by almost 150 percent. With specifications such as those, I can see this chip appearing in a variety of Apple devices; my hope’s on a small MacBook with integrated NAND flash memory.
