This is the story of a man who took into his very own hands an iBook with a failed logic board. You may recall that Apple’s Logic Board Repair program was specifically targeted at the exact problem (scrambled or no video output from the computer) described in this account of daring repair. However, Apple’s program has since ended, so an alternative was needed.
Mark Hoekstra did a little research and found that the problem was with faulty solder between the video chip and and the logic board. The solution to fix this was to use a heatgun or blowtorch to reflow the solder. However, Mark owned neither heatgun nor blowtorch, so he used a can of alcohol to heat the little chip. Amazingly his solution worked and the iBook is now functioning once again. Take a look at his video of the process on YouTube—I’m astounded!
