New uses for old Macs

Posted by Kate Marshall | Tuesday, April 03, 2007 11:30 AM PT

iBook%20white.jpgWhat to do with an old Mac sitting around the house? That’s a question I ask myself occasionally, when I’m not wondering why my cat makes noises in her sleep, or whether low-rise pants will ever truly disappear from the fashion world (hope springs eternal and all that).

Lucky for us, there are some options when it’s time to put that daisy iMac, tangerine iBook, or aging PowerBook out to pasture. Macworld’s Christopher Breen lays down a few helpful hints for anyone who doesn’t want to throw a perfectly good Mac out in the trash (and no one would because computers do contain environmentally-harmful materials; they need to be disposed of properly). How about using that Mac as an information hub for the family? From informing family members of vital tasks via Stickies to setting up a Mac-based answering machine, it’s an innovative way to recycle a computer for even more useful means. Example (based on my own experiences): Calendars for each family member can be organized through iCal, potentially avoiding those embarrassing (and upsetting) “I forgot to pick up Timmy from his tuba lesson!” moments.

Or how about sending it to me. I live in Jamaica W.I. and Macs are kinda uncommon here. I wouldn't mind getting an old iBook or PowerBook for basic e-mail and experimental purposes with OS X. Even an old iMac G3 would do me just fine.

Hey Andre da Costa, just because Kate used a picture of an old iBook as a post picture doesn't mean she is offering one.

I'll have you know that Low rise is the best thing to happen to jeans since the boot cut.

But I've always scrapped my old computers. But I had PCs before my macbook.

Hey mister, that's MY iBook you're looking at!
But in all seriousness, I'm all for donating old (and new) Macs for those who could use them, which is what Kate did when I started attending college.
The iCal alarm in conjuction with the program is a beautiful resource.
