ModBook finally winging its way to buyers, one year later

Axiotron ModBookAs my colleague Mr. Pourhadi noted last week, it appears that those who ordered an Axiotron ModBook last year may be getting a late holiday gift: the third-party Mac tablet mod is finally shipping officially. If you’ve been salivating over the prospect of getting your hands on the world’s first tablet Mac, the time is nigh.

Axiotron and its sale partner, Other World Computing, have beefed up the hardware in the ModBook, revving the MacBooks to 2.0 and 2.2GHz processors and shipping the computers with Leopard installed. The models will run you $2,279 or $2,479, depending on the specs. And, as Dan P. already mentioned, GPS is now included by default on both models, should you ever get lost with your tablet (how long before someone works up a nifty program to let you find your tablet when you misplace it?).

Of course, the question that hangs over the ModBook’s success is whether or not this is a space that Apple will soon enter. Could this be a costly too-late disaster for Axiotron, or will the legion of would-be tablet users ensure that this pays off for them?
