MacBooks gain Core 2 Duos

Posted by Derik DeLong | Wednesday, November 08, 2006 6:29 AM PT

MacBook If you listened to the last podcast, you’ll know that Dan jinxed himself by saying that his MacBook has stayed up to date for far longer than any of his other Macs. Just for that, Steve has unleashed MacBooks with Core 2 Duo processors. The clock speed in the new MacBooks is the same as before.

The RAM and storage stats have changed a bit. The bottom still has 512 MB of RAM, but the 2.0 GHz models both feature 1 GB (definitely a good thing). The white 2.0 GHz model has an 80 GB drive now. The black has a 120 GB drive. Both top end models now feature a Superdrive capable of dual layer media.

The store is down so I can’t check if the black tax is still in effect (though I suspect it is as the pricing is the same). Who’s ready to plunk down for one of these? And am I a moron for not waiting a couple days for these to come out and repairing my Powerbook 12” instead (due back today)?

[Thanks Ariya]

Wow. Didn't see that one coming, but it certainly adds a lot of value to the MacBook line. A 64-bit laptop for just over $1000? Nice. I also like the default 1GB of RAM on the two upper models without an increase in price.

Anyone know for sure if Apple is buying the Core 2 with 64 bit enabled?? It isn't listed in the specs anywhere and Intel has been known to disable features while reducing price.

I am ready to plunk down my cash. My wife's Windows Machine ( my old one) is on the fritz and I have been holding it together with bailing wire and bubblegum waiting for these to come out. Nice to see the memory bump for 2.0 ghz white one. Once she is set up and all her data is moved it will be a Mac only household. Yay for me, no more dealing with Windows!!! Now hurry up and open Apple Store.

I am still waiting on the Mac mini to get upgraded, anyone has an idea of when that will be?

Looks like the black MacBook premium is just $50 - if you configure the 2GHz white MB with a 120GB drive, it comes to just $50 less than the black MB.

After my brief research, it appears as though the "black tax" has gone down (according to the US store). The difference in price between the white and black 2.0Ghz MacBooks is still $200USD, however the upgrade from 80GB to 120GB on the middle-road MacBook now costs $150, leaving the black-tax at $50. Although I still won't go for it.

black macbooks are ugly anyway... it looks like an ordinary PC.

i'm still waiting for apple to release a macbook that doesn't share it's memory, then i'll buy one. otherwise, i might just have to buy a pro.

Me being an owner of a first generation MacBook, it would be sweet if Apple had some time of trade-in plan in which I can swap my current MacBook and a little moolah with one of these bad boys.

@Craig: It's definitely 64-bit (look here). A 64-bit architecture isn't a "feature" that can be disabled.

STEVE JOBS HATES ME. I just bought a black one two months ago... I paid $150 extra for the color and I could have had a C2D *and* a 120GB hard drive if I waited. Why, Steve, why?

12"PowerBooks rock! The MacBooks are not a replacement for these great little machines. Dunno what I'll do when it comes time to update.
