It’s not a total recall, but a series of batteries will be replaced at no cost to the owners as part of the 15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Exchange Program. The batteries are perfectly safe to use, they just won’t last as long as the replacement. The winning serial numbers are:
The affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC.
Did you win? I hadn’t read about any MacBook Pro battery issues prior to this, so it’s good to see Apple being proactive. I just hope that by the time the Mac Pro is released (in one week, fingers crossed) it’s ready and won’t have the myriad of issues the MacBooks have had.
EDIT: Uhhh… of course I read this site. Sorry I forgot Dan. I read your stuff. Really. I swear.
This IS insfact because there was a major battery issue going around. Quite a number of Macbook Pros have had thier batteries swell and blow thier case as well as overheat which could cause a fire.
Im surprised you never heard about this because it was all over the tech sites since May.
can anybody comment as to why this recall happened? i am very confused since i have not had any problems with my battery at all. oh wel, free battery :)
Jim, if you want to debate with Apple, that's fine, but I'm simply repeating what they said.
That's all right Derik; I'd forgotten about it myself. :)
Jim: There were indeed reports of batteries in Apple notebooks blowing up/catching fire, and these reports were largely around the initial release of the MacBook Pro. The computers involved in the reports were not MacBook Pros, though. They were old PowerBooks. Sidenote: I even saw a Dell mentioned in a similar report, so not all of them were even Macs (but I do know the reports of which you speak--the thing is that those were actually PowerBooks).
Personally, I can tell you I have had 2 macbook batteries swell and burst out of my computer.
