With the first major reviews of the MacBook Air coming out today, many consumers are beginning to contemplate whether to purchase the super ultra uber-thin laptop. But, even if one does decide to get Steve’s latest goodie, another major choice still awaits — whether to cough up the extra $1000 for the fast, cool 64GB SSD drive. But, don’t fear. Back at the Macworld mothership, there are two articles that can help with this decision.`
The first, “Inside the MacBook Air: the solid-state option,” talks about the benefits of a solid-state drive over the Air’s default, 80GB PATA option (yes, PATA, not the super-fast SATA now standard in all Macs). With better power-consumption, more durability, and a smoother, faster experience in OS X, the case for the SSD is a good one, if, of course, you have the cash.
The next article, by Macworld and MacUser fearless leader Jason Snell, describes the process that he went through in cleaning out his Mac’s drive to fit the MacBook Air’s 80GB HDD. If you are going for this drive option in your slick portable and want some tips on how to fit all your stuff onto it, this article is a must read.
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
The PATA/SATA argument doesn't even come into play here cause the hard drive is not going to be nearly as fast enough to even max out on PATA speeds.
Super-fast SATA, yes, but it only matters in case of a high end gaming rig.
