It looks like Apple may be silently upgrading the Mac minis that they’re shipping to customers. I say “may” because there’s only been one report of this so far, from a user named SuperG to French news site MacBidouille and its English-equivalent, HardMac:
I have ordered a Mac mini Core solo with 1GB of RAM last Saturday to use it as a server, and what a surprise when I received the box!My first thought was perhaps Apple merely switched boxes and gave him the Core Duo Mac mini model, but the 100GB hard drive is a build-to-order option either way. So there’s a possibility he ended up with a BTO option, and there’s a possibility Apple is in fact upgrading the specs on the down low. That, by the way, would not be unprecedented: Apple did the very same thing with Mac mini models last year. Perhaps we’ll get a mention at September 12th’s mystery event. My Mac mini has been upgraded:
- Core Duo 1.66GHz instead of Core Solo 1.5GHz
- HD 100GB instead of 60GB
- and a SuperDrive instead of a Combo!Thanks Apple !
On the box, the specifications are those of a Mac mini Core Solo…
Hopefully that's just the new specs for the high-end and they'll keep the core solo and drop the price to $399 with the current high-end dropped to $599 as a mid-level.
...or similar prices for a BTO system like the MacPro.
I think it's just a screw up. Too much has been upgraded for the same cost. the previous "example" was just a small processor speed upgrade.
