Rich Lefko from MyMac.com has published an account of the day his hard drive left him in his PowerMac G5, and the lessons learned from that experience. It’s a perfect tale to complement Derik’s post early this morning, which urges one and all to back up their drive. The bottom line of Rich’s article is this:
You NEED to back up your hard drive. I was lucky and got 99% of my stuff back. Think about the thousands of photos and the family movies on that drive. How would you feel if you lost them today forever? It’s not “IF” your hard drive will fail, it’s “WHEN”
Some other lessons are worth learning as well, such as these:
Appropriately I will actually be attempting to upgrade the hard drive in my MacBook Pro later today or tomorrow. After reading Rich’s article above and the horror tale of a MBP hard drive upgrade last week, I will certainly be cautious in my endeavors. I’ll (hopefully) be able to post back when the process is complete with some pictures and stories. Until then, back up your drive!
I have a G5 1.8. I downloaded the OS update and "that's all she wrote" my system froze and I couldn't access the hard drive. I have hundreds of photos and music on the drive. I ran Norton, disk warrior etc. DiskWarrior can see the drive but fails 50% through the process. Help please.
