Great moments in branding: Intel Core 2 Duo

Posted by Dan Moren | Monday, May 08, 2006 7:00 AM PT

Intel Core 2 DuoFor those of you hoping that in associating with Apple, some of that company’s trademark elegance and simplicity might have rubbed off on hardware partner Intel, well, hope away, but it sure doesn’t look like it.

Intel has introduced a pair of new chips—a duo, if you will. Those of you who follow such things undoubtedly know the processors by their codenames: Conroe for the desktop chip, Merom for its laptop counterpart. But the two will be united under one umbrella brand: the Core 2 Duo. AP is also reporting that Intel will produce a chip for high-end gaming, which will be marketed as the—wait for it…wait for it—Core 2 Extreme.

Have you learned nothing, Intel? Pentium, Centrino, Celeron, VIIV, vPro. You guys should not be allowed to name things. “Core 2 Duo” sounds like we’re ending up with four of something. Will the forthcoming quad-core Kentsfield chip be billed as the Core 2 Quattro, or perhaps the Core 4 Quattro? Now it makes me think of Audi and Schick.

Honestly, it hardly seems as though Core (1?) has been around long enough to be succeeded already; I mean, the first computers using that architecture (codenamed Yonah) were only released in January of this year. Six months and we’re already on Core 2? You’ve done Gordon Moore proud.

But you’re losing major points by throwing out the “Extreme” branding. Not cool, Intel. Not cool at all.

You think Core 2 Duo is bad? Just wait for Core 2 Solo. . . .

Hey at least we won't have ugly stickers that announce it on our computers. The again, Dell and others are working toward stickless designs too aren't they?

Whatever, Merom will be sweet!

...and will they even make any more new solo processors? They are basically transitioning to multi-core technology exclusively.

I'm pretty sure this is the end of single core processors for Intel. Personally I think that Core Duo 2 would have been better, but Core 2 Duo is still appropriate. Seems to me like Mac users are bitter that Apple is using Intel CPU's.
