The new MacBook joins the Mac mini in its use of the Intel Integrated GMA-950 Graphics chipset. Like the mini, the MacBook sets asides 64MB of memory for a graphics buffer, plus an additional 16MB for “general setup.” I find myself wondering what exactly “general setup” is, but that may be a factor of my nitpicking attention to RAM usage, since my current iBook has all of 256MB.
In addition, the new MacBooks add a mini-DVI port which seems to add support (finally!) for attaching an external monitor in extended desktop mode. Prior iBooks were limited to mirroring the desktop, which was rather annoying at times. Glad to see that Apple has removed what was a totally artificial limitation.
The only annoying part of this entire video situation is the lack of any adapters. if you want to hook up your shiny new MacBook to a TV or external monitor (either VGA or DVI), you’ll have to shell out for the additional adapters, which run about $20 apiece.
Doesn’t mean I won’t be buying one, of course. My 12” iBook G3/500 is getting a little long in the tooth.
You realize that means you can't run Final Cut on the MacBooks. Which totally sucks for those of use who use those types of programs
