Garmin shows you the way to Cupertino

GarminI don’t have a GPS, since finding your way around Boston is difficult enough without a computerized assistant trying to insist that it knows better. But as I’m setting out on a long road trip at the end of the week, I must confess myself glad that my traveling companion has purchased a GPS unit for the car.

Even better, the unit in question is a Garmin, a company which is making substantial inroads among the Mac population by investing time and energy in bringing its products to OS X. They’ve even provided a handy page of all their Mac-specific software, complete with a timeline for expected compatibility. At the moment, they’ve got a handful of native apps for everything from loading maps to configuring your GPS unit with new voices and icons.

Glad to see that Mac compatibility’s a priority for the Garmin team; if I find myself in need of a GPS in the future, they’re at the top of my list.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and the support of Mac software has been good. The WebUpdater keeps the firmware up to date. I just purchased a map update and it was loaded in OSX just fine. I also have a Garmin bicycle unit and the software support has been good for OSX.

TomTom has had good Mac support for a while. That is what drove my choice when I bought mine a year ago, not Garmin's plans to have Mac support in the future.

Well, I live in Boston and find my lil Garmin 250W to be a lifesaver since not having lived here for long means I'm pretty much screwed without it til I figure out where shit is.

I mean except for when the signal cuts out in the tunnels.

No issues with the Mac support; I specifically wanted Mac update capability and none of the other ones I looked at had this.

Where is the Mac version of MapSource? I'll buy another Garmin receiver when I can plan my trips and load the resulting routes and maps to my GPSR from Mac OS X.
