Chasing MacPro

Posted by Derik DeLong | Tuesday, August 08, 2006 6:44 AM PT

NH Apple Store I’ve been anticipating the Mac Pro for a long time. Back when the G5s came out, I vowed to wait until they hit 3 GHz (you know, the twelve months later that never happened). As time went on, I wasn’t terribly impressed with the G5 updates. Then when the Intel transition was announced, my mind was made up. The Intel Power Mac was going to be my next Mac.

I was, quite honestly, blown away by what Apple came up with. The Mac Pro pretty much matches what I predicted, but exceeds my somewhat conservative expectations. I was ready to head down and get one. Steve said they were available today. Given, that was through the online store, but surely they’d have stock in the stores.

Nope. I called the New Hampshire Apple Store and they didn’t have any and had no idea when they’d arrive. I gave them my phone and email. They didn’t even know whether they’d be installing the Bluetooth modules. I tried calling Chestnut Hill and Burlington here in Massaschusetts. Neither store had any. One ventured a guess of a week. A week. Given the increasing frustration of the answering Apple employees and my lack of success, I decided it was best I give up and wait to hear. Have any of you found any in brick and mortar stores?

I called around to the NC Apple stores, and there were none to be found there, either. One store said it would probably be around a week. The second store did a lot of checking around and was very helpful but didn't come up with any further information on when they might be arriving in the store. He candidly suggested a wait and see approach.

I called the NH store and got the same info as you did. The stores are usually completely out of the loop on new hardware releases.

I had my MacBook Pro in hand before they even had a floor model set up. I suspect my Mac Pro will be here before they have stock as well. (I did a CTO order online instead... I'll eat the tax.)
