Apples and Atoms

intelLogo1.jpgDear Intel,

You make processors. Lots of processors. We get it.

Seriously, we can’t keep up anymore.

The buzz now comes from Forbes’ Brian Caulfield, who examines Intel’s new Atom mobile line and makes the semi-obvious-but-why-not-mention-it prediction that they’ll one day end up in Apple products, including the iPhone.

What’s so special about Atom? Mr. Caulfield, please:

The new processors will run at speeds of up to 1.83 Ghz—cranking out performance comparable to a 2004 era notebook—while using only modest amounts of power. The result will be a new class of pocket-sized, battery-powered gizmos, which Intel says will begin shipping later this quarter. And, unlike today’s personal digital assistants, Intel boasts such devices will be able to run PC-class operating systems, such as Windows Vista.

Yummay. Caulfield has more info and — some, admittedly, common sense — analysis, so give it a read if you’re so inclined. Or reclined.
