YellowDog still cruising on PowerPC Linux

Posted by Derik DeLong | Friday, February 16, 2007 7:34 AM PT

YellowDog Sure, Ubuntu isn’t hip to PowerPC Linux, but long time PowerPC Linux developer Terrasoft, is still around. They’ve released details of their upcoming 5.0 release. As is their standard operating procedure, they are letting members get first dibs at the OS followed several weeks later by a public, free download.

I remember YellowDog from the days when nobody really wanted to run Linux. It was a shameful thing to admit, akin to a being in your underwear dream. You know, the really embarrassing one when you were wearing tighty-whities. Now it’s socially acceptable to run Linux, at least in tech circles. The latest version features E17, a new version of the Enlightenment window manager (I’m guessing that’s a good thing).

It is very interesting with all the press lately about Mac users switching to Ubuntu, likely on PPC machines. However, in my experience, in comparing Ubuntu 6.06 which I was running at the time, to Yellow Dog Linux 4.1, YDL wins out in Mac-likeness and overall usefulness. I am very much looking forward to YDL v.5 and hope all those new Ubuntu PPC Linux users check it out too!

P.S. Joining YDL.net is well worth it, as you get not only the latest version of YDL first, but also all th ebugfixes, when needed.
