Mail.app, now with CinemaScope

MailWidescreenSo, pretty much all of Apple’s product lines now at least have the option of sporting a widescreen display (except for the poor little eMac). Having all that real estate can be useful; but there are plenty of apps that don’t really seem to care what your aspect ratio is. Mail.app, for example.

Fortunately, some enterprising community members over on Ars Technica’s forums complained about this fact, and lo and behold, one of them stepped up to the challenge. Installing a simple plug-in will make your copy of Mail.app take on a three column appearance, swapping its preview pane from below the list of messages to its right, and looking something like the picture above and right. Find the instructions on this forum post (you may need to go into Terminal if you’ve never installed a Mail plug-in before, but don’t worry, you can copy and paste).

I have to say, it’s taking some getting used to, but I can see the benefits right away: for one thing, there’s a lot less scrolling through mail messages. After trying this out, I realized I hadn’t been using NetNewsWire’s widescreen format either, so I switched that over. Now I’m taking full advantage of my MacBook’s gorgeous display. I don’t know if they have a name for this package, but I’m throwing out “Letterbox” as my suggestion.

This is great. I've been tempted to use Entourage purely b/c i wanted the widescreen view. Now I can keep using mail.app.
