Mac Swallowed by Nintendo

NES Mac miniYou know, I’ve been thinking for a while that Nintendo and Apple should team up, but shoving a Mac mini into an original NES wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. Apple ought to add it to the list of Mac mini mods on their product page, though (“Big Ideas,” below the scroll on the right).

Nintendo and Apple are companies with very similar ethics. They both value innovation over the same old tired retreads. Ever since the Nintendo DS came out, with its triple threat of WiFi, touch screen, and microphone technologies, I’ve been impressed by Nintendo’s dedication to thinking differently where games are concerned. And if you look at the design of the Revolution controller and the new DS Lite, they’re clearly taking a page from Apple’s shiny white playbook. Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s cult following has even approached Jobsian levels.

Nintendo’s rivals in the gaming market are Sony and Microsoft, both of whom are chief Apple competitors. And Apple certainly could use a better presence in the gaming market. The upcoming Revolution is supposed to have a downloadable catalog of all of Nintendo’s past games. How about licensing an emulator to Apple and letting Mac users buy games via iTMS? I’d be there.
