How to remove AnchorFree’s banner ad

Posted by Cyrus Farivar | Thursday, November 08, 2007 11:30 AM PT

Last time I posted about how to set up a free VPN by using AnchorFree, I lamented the annoying banner ad across the top and wished there was a Greasemonkey script that would take of this terribly irritating problem.

An astute reader, Ben, pointed me to a new script that does that.

I took it for a test drive, and so long as you’re using AnchorFree, it works great, but if you’re not, then the script cuts off the first inch of a site. So if you’re a fan of this free VPN service, keep an eye out for the script.

Thanks Ben!

I hate to bring up the tired debate over weather or not you should use ad-blocking technologies. But VPN aint exactly cheap or easy to do. If you want to use a free vpn without ads, id suggest hamachi.

Speaking of obnoxious ads, does anyone know of any Greasemonkey scripts that can get rid of all the bloody ads on MacUser? I sure do like the site and I'm glad I can read it free of charge and all, but boy those ads sure do annoy me.

Who cares how the site makes its money or pays its writers. I just need to get rid of this annoyance.

:P

Like MTigerV just said. Free isn't always free, and its a bit selfish of you to rob this service of what is likely one of its few revenue models just cuz you're annoyed at something.

I hate banner ads as much as the next guy who spends anywhere from 4-12 hours a day on the internet between work, school and hobbies. But they're just a necessary evil, like red lights and taxes. Plain and simple.

Seeing a hint like this on MacUser is a little disappointing. Promoting the free VPN service is great. Showing users how to block the services source of income is just bad.

It's one thing to block a websites advertisements, it's something completely different when you block ads that allow you to surf the web securely.

Or, you can actually pay a company to provide you VPN service. www.witopia.net and www.hotspotvpn.com are both good and have been around a while.
