typespace.jpgFor those of you who stayed up late in college engaging in pizza-fueled late-night bull sessions over typography, this one’s for you.

At this year’s TypeCon 2007 (yes, even typography aficionados have their own show), Redmond and Cupertino have hammered out a deal that all of us have been waiting on serif fonts for:

Under the agreement, Apple and Microsoft are extending the seamless Web and software experience Apple users have enjoyed for years when using and viewing popular Microsoft fonts such as Times New Roman, Arial and Verdana.

Whew. That was a close one.

Wait, we get to keep using Arial, aka Helvetica Lite™?

And here I thought we might be able to get rid of that mess of a font once and for all.

Given that Arial was created as a substitution for Helevetica and (IIRC) Times New Roman as a substitute for Times (Microsoft didn't want to pay the patents, so it created fonts that could represent the text without changing spacing), it seems like the reverse mapping should suffice. Hopefully, Apple didn't give up too much.

I'm not a type nerd, but I read the blog of one.
