WWDC ‘07 No new EA games for PowerPC users. Web apps instead?

Yesterday brought the somewhat disappointing revelation that iPhone users wouldn’t be reaping the benefits of having the incredibly talented Mac developer community at the helm of third party development. Instead, web applications were touted as the solution, bringing many, many web developers, many of whom have not the slightest idea of what makes an OS X app great. We said “Oh well, at least Macs will be getting some extra love with EA’s announcement that they’d be rolling out new games for the Mac platform. No more of these third party one-offs.”

Oh wait. According to an post on the gaming blog Joystiq, EA’s offerings for the Mac platform will be based on Cider portability engine (think CrossOver, but for games). What’s that mean? Users of the latest Intel processors will hardly feel a thing. After all the latest Intel chips made the Cider technology possible. But that would mean… uh oh. That’s right. PowerPC users (myself included) aren’t going to be playing much of anything at all. All the more reason for me to celebrate the bundling of Rails, Mongrel, and Capistrano: I’ll make my own web games. Pretty sweet, right?

I think if you are still on a PowerPC it is time to start looking into an intel model if you want to run the latest and greatest software. As time goes by I'm sure software vendors are going to continue to reduce developing for the PowerPC for the Mac.

This neither surprises nor disappoints me. These types of games are heavily optimized for the processors on which they run.

But john's patronizing comment pisses me off. It's not like PowerPC users are Luddites stuck in the dark ages. My computer is less than 2 years old! I expect to install Leopard and Delicious Library 2 and more "latest and greatest" software.
